i've done a little digging around, and the Sun blade100 seems less and
less attractive:
the 500-MHz ultrasparc IIe processor on it has 256K of L2 cache. it scores
174 SPECint2000 and 182 SPECfp2000.
by comparison, a "mere" 650MHz pentium III on an Intel SE440BX coughs up
299 SPECint2000 and 215 SPECfp2000. and a 1.2GHz athlon processor on an
ASUS A7V gets 458 SPECint2000 and 352 SPECfp2000 (more than twice the
integer and almost twice the floating-point performance). these are
official figures from www.specbench.org.
so i guess clock-per-clock UltraSparcs still have better floating point,
but the UltraSparc III currently maxes out at ~ 700MHz and costs an arm, a
leg, and your left nut...
