Hi fellow PLUGgers,
Here's a little something from Olivier Fourdan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, the
author of Xfce. I sent a question to the Xfce mailing list regarding that
memory use issue discussion I had with Orly Andico.
I got a lot of replies (most of them partially agreeing with Orly,
especially about the point of that extra fluff GNOME and KDE applications
load), but Olivier's is realistic, and straight the point. For whatever it
may be worth.
"Federico,
"When using similar apps (ie WM, sounds, pager, panel, filemanager, etc.),
Xfce uses about 20Mb, GNOME and KDE more than 40Mb.
"In any case, you save at least 20Mb.
"Cheers, Olivier.
For those of you interested in checking out Xfce:
1. Xfce 3.8.0 is on its way. Supposedly a lot of improvements (and I trust
this guy, his latest release really did have a lot of substantial
improvements, both on the look and feel of the UI, as well as the memory
and process management).
2. The Xfce website is (expectedly) at <http://www.xfce.org/>.
3. To join the Xfce mailing list send the word "subscribe xfce" in the
subject of an e-mail to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
