I just got userland PPP up and running.. wonder of wonders. This is one
case where the HOWTOs are *much* more readable. The Handbook seems to be
written with all the special, difficult cases in mind, but a
straightforward "how do I dial in with PPP and PAP" is hard to find.

I think it's because.. due to the elitist attitude of the xBSD
maintainers, the people writing their docs are.. really smart people. So
the simple cases get left out.

Anyway, userland PPP under FreeBSD is a wonder. There's *no*
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets (took me a while to figure out that their equivalent,
ppp.secrets, is only used for dialin) but everything goes into
/etc/ppp/ppp.conf: chat script, list of numbers (yup, it can cycle
telephone numbers like Windoze NT).. and update your /etc/resolv.conf from
ISP-provided DNS values. Kewl. And it can do NAT (in userland) and PPPoE.

Anyway, my problem now is that I can't get the onboard SiS 530 video card
working under XFree86 3.3.6: the mode seems to start up, but my monitor
lights flash continuously and there's no video.

Worse, pressing Ctrl-Alt-Esc, which is supposed to kill the X server,
causes the machine to power off!! (yup, it's ATX power, and I think
there's an interaction with the main board 'coz SiS 530 has embedded video
controller).

I was kinda hoping FreeBSD would give me a better experience on this
memory-starved machine (30MB RAM + 2MB video) than The Bloatware Which Is
Red Hat and Ximian. Or maybe I'll just go out and get another 64MB or so..
:( with 64MB costing 800 it seems not really worth the effort..
