i praise redhat for such a move.
1. it allows people who want avail for quality service to get
quality service abiet at a cost. (people who need free updates
can still download it for free...the hardway. there are even
scripts available for downloading these updates automatgically.)
2. provide value added services to their paying customers. corporate
bookies still have the impression that paid software is good software
and free software sucks. (this is the reason why M$ continues to
dominate. it is because of the impression that "nothing free is bound
to be good".)
3. this enables redhat to have a profit making machanism to
continue providing the community with quality software. hehehe.
(maybe if they charged for it sooner. rh7 would not have been
such as mess.) they have to be profitable or else their investors
might pull the plug. path to profitability is important.
i feel that open source solutions companies should follow suit of
redhat. RHN is a value-added service and this it is not a necessity
but a luxury. there are also free software/scripts that provide
services that RHN provides too. redhat has begun by providing this
services for companies for convinience.
this is directly in line with their thrust to give anyway the software
for free but sell the service.
