----------

hey peeps! we at econ are trying our best to campaign for one of the
best economics professors we've ever had. if ms. monsod wins as
senator, it will truly be a loss to the school of economics but it
really doesn't matter just as long as she continues to serve our country
with the same fire, passion and dedication we have seen.

we believe wholeheartedly in the capabilities of this outstanding woman.
we hope that you would too. pls campaign for her in your own respective
ways. thank you. =)

My sister Winnie Monsod is running for a seat in the Philippine
Senate.Although she is well known and has excellent name recognition in
Manila, this may not be the case in the outlying areas. Time is of the
essence, and therefore I am writing you to please do whatever you can to
help her candidacy along in your part of the Philippines.

She is highly intelligent: She graduated Cum Laude from the University
of the Philippines with a Bachelors degree in Economics. She has a
Masters in Economics from the prestigious Wharton School of Business in
Pennsylvania, where she was consistently on the Dean's list. As a matter
of fact, the dean of the School of Economics at the time, Raymond
Whittlesey, wrote a letter to my father, calling Winnie a "wonder girl."

She is exceptionally disciplined: You cannot write a weekly column for
three respected local newspapers, teach Economics at the University of
the Philippines, and actively participate in deliberative discussions
with international bodies like the United Nations Committee for
Development Policy in New York and the International Food and Research
Institute in Washington and do everything as well as she does unless
you are extremely disciplined.

She has integrity: At one point, while a member of Cory Aquino's cabinet
as Secretary of the NEDA (National Economic & Development Authority),
she traveled to the US and one Philippine newspaper reported that she
was the only one of many
sent abroad who returned the unused portion of her per diem allotment.
This is certainly not the first time Winnie has been asked to run for a
senate position. But this is the only time she has committed herself to
do so. When she asked for my opinion, as a sister, I gave her to
understand that if highly competent, highly caring individuals of the
Philippines did not choose to make themselves available for public
service, then she and such other like minded individuals should not
criticize some poor excuse of
wannabe public servants who at least have the guts to try.

Winnie is running and I sincerely think she should be given the
opportunity to serve, and I assure you, she will serve well.

It occurs to me that this election is an excellent opportunity to put
competent, caring people into office so that necessary changes and good
government programs can be set in place. If the electorate do not choose
well, then they should not wring their hands and weep over "pobre
Filipinas."
