Try to hack into your own system :). Look for any known exploits that
may grant you root access. You can't recover the root password then
but once you are root, you can change the root password to something in
the future you can hopefully remember better. And of course, plug the
hole after you're done. Promising one for Linux is wuftpd: has got a
serious bug that grants root...several systems here have been rooted
with this.
