When you get into vi, it is in command mode.
use the cursor keys, or for not so great telnet programs, use hjkl to
navigate.
Ctrl- B, D, F U to page up down half/full page.

i to go to insert mode.
I to insert at beginning of line
a to insert after (append) cursor
A to append at end of line.
Press ESC to go back to command mode where you can issue new commands.

almost every letter is a command.

some more commands --

r replace
s substitute (is actually replace and then insert)
c change
y yank (copy)

(cut commands)
x delete char
dd delete line
dw delete word
d( delete to beginning of sentence.
d) delete to end of sentence.
d$ delete to end of line
d^ delete to beginning of line.
d{ delete to beginning of paragraph
d} delete to end of paragraph.
p paste

By the way, instead of deleting, you can also move by just using the 2nd
letter of the delete command.
e.g. w moves the cursor one word, ) moves the cursor to end of sentence, and
$ to end of line. You get the drift.

of course, then you can use / to locate a word, e.g.

/findthistextpattern

shall I begin with regular expressions?

anyway, begin any command with a number and that command will be executed
that number of times.
e.g. 4p means paste the contents of the buffer 4 times.

you can also do 100j to go down 100 times or do a :100 to go to line 100 or
do a :+100 to go down 100 lines or 100<ENTER> to go down 100 times, or ....
too many ways to skin a cat...

just curious, just how many people in this list are still using vi?
