Have you checked dependencies? Upgraded your system utilities first? Try
rpm -ivh rather than -Uvh.
-Uvh will try to remove the old kernel and it's related files before
installing the new kernel.
-ivh will merely install the new kernel and modules to another directory
beside your old kernel.
I'm running a stock red hat 6.2 install, with the latest updates built
from src.rpm and installed _before_ I installed a new kernel.
It's now dual booting between 2.2.14 and 2.2.17, so you may have the
same luck I did ;-)
