i think so cause i also partion my free space using win2k and it work perfectly.
but if i skip that process my "/" partition only accepts 1gb of my harddisk.

I have the same setup, except that I have 2 primary partitions and 1 extended (with 2 logical drives) and there is a free undefined partition.
