hi everyone!

warning: long questions ahead!

here's my current setup:
Mandrake Linux 7.1
8-port Equinox SST Multimodem card
Dell Optiplex G1 (as listed in Linux.com)

i've successfully setup the multimodem card so that my box can now accept
incoming faxes; i've also put 8 entries in /etc/inittab with the appropriate
'fax DEV=<modem> FAXDIR=<incoming fax dir> answer' entries for each modem
with their corresponding incoming directories. i've also set up the default
fax script to use Class 1 modems (primarily only because it already works
and i didnt think i'd need to try Class 2 or 2.0). when i send regular faxes
from our HP Laserjet 3100 (fax/copier/printer in one) to the linux box, i
can receive 'em fine, no problem. but when someone sends our linux box a fax
from a Canon P301 fax machine, the modem replies with a fax tone but somehow
the fax gets cut before it can get through. the Canon P301 fax machine, i'm
told, is a japanese machine, with the messages it displays on its LCD all in
japanese characters.

my question is... why? why should a fax from a japanese machine fail to get
through? does this have anything to do with modem class? what modem class
does Equinox SST support? or does efax (or the fax script) have any other
options that need to be considered?

also, for viewing received faxes, i edited the /etc/fax.config script so
that the following is the viewing option used:

"VIEW='$EFIX -ve -p$PAGEDIM -r300 -opgm $f"

this is the 75dpi setting. however when i view faxes with this option, i am
unable to scroll through the image. is there any way to view the file in a
scrollable window using "fax view"?

also, can i convert the fax files to a bitmap? or some other graphic format?
i know, i know, RTFM, and i've done that, but i can't seem to find any fax
script option for converting fax files to jpg or gif or whatever.

thanks in advance! any help will be greatly appreciated!
