yup it is. the bulk of apps package in linux distros still uses 32bit versions of file
access calls......cp, useradd, pam,ftpd,smb among others....
it is important that the distro maintainer do its homework very well and use gcc
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BIT=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE (in compiling thier apps) to force all file
access to 64bit variants instead of 32bit versions. serveral types change like off_t
to off64_t. additionally, use of _LARGEFILE_SOURCE and _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE defines LFS
function open64 directly. like i said this is what we have done with suse 7.1 on both
ia32 & s390 to do LFS. im not sure how redhat did it but you may ask their devel
people if u may.
