Im working on the general architecture. Just about the whole kernel. My
main interest is to take out all policy from the kernel and put it in user
space. Only protection should be left in the kernel. This is to allow
applications to implement their own abstractions without going around
and fighting fixed policies in the kernel. I have emailed linus about
some changes I proposed but he hates the idea:-) He has very strong words
for it:-) Anyway I am trying right now to make linux multiboot compliant
so i could strip GRUB of all other kinds of loader but the multiboot
loader.
One other thing is that im trying to provide powerful support for user
space device drivers. This is my starting point for transforming linux
into a more generic kernel. This means designing interfaces that export
the underlying hardware in a secure manner. Its more like turning linux
into a library. Applications link to this library. The library provides
the abstraction while the kernel only protects the applications from
trashing each other. The other benefit of user space device drivers as a
library is that you can make device drivers calls with no overhead at
all and do it safely. that also means we could use binary only windows
drivers by simply writing a simple glue layer. or make a specialized
library for providing word a windows like environment and use binary only
solaris drivers to print postscript. or maybe make a mac library or a qnx
library. or maybe strip everything off and install it int the palm pilot
or a make a distributed shared memory library on top of it....
