Well, if this is really what you want to do, then the best choice of
"distro" would be Linux from Scratch! :)

I've long wanted to try my hand at doing that, but nowadays I don't
have the time.  Doing it that way requires a fairly high investment in
both time and bandwidth.  Unless someone can get ahold of the packages
listed in http://linuxfromscratch.org/ and burn them onto a CD (are
you listening cousin?).
