#_ Hi,
#_
#_ I have an old Linux box (2.2.17pre9ext3) recently upgraded to 1.5GB of
#_ RAM but it gives a message:
#_
#_ Warning only 960MB will be used.
#_
#_ What should be done?

You should recompile your kernel with support for 2GB maximum memmory.

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
Processor type and features --->(2GB) Maximum Physical Memory
