Thank you, thank you, thank you! I read the EULA, and yes, it looks like
as long as you get this it's free as in beer. This also provides such
fonts as Arial and Times New Roman which are much better than those
currently available (basically because they're TrueType fonts), at least
to my untrained eye.

XFree86 4.10 for Debian is still not out (although packages are available
in the maintainer's home directory, but these are pre-X pa lang). To those
who use it (Orly?), how do you find the implementation of font smoothing?

This version of XFree86 is something I'm really looking forward to. I hope
the Debian maintainers can sort out the issues they're dealing with so
that all of us Debian users can experience the performance benefits it
brings. :)
