what is the difference between switches, hardware, and layer 4?
Ordinary  switches   works  on  the datalink   layer (layer 2)  of  OSI though some got network layer (layer 3) capabilities.  It filters, forward and floods frames based on the destination address of each frames.  It doesn't care what kind of traffic or upper layer protocol/application he is switching.

Layer 4 switches works on the  transport layer of  OSI layering model.   It has an ability to look inside a packets and make sophisticated forwarding decisions based on information of a data. This makes him able to make filtering and farwarding decision based on  TCP/IP headers and port numbers on the traffic  passing through it.   Load balancing http traffic across a cluster of servers  is one of its major application.

thats true migz and im wondering how mindspring handle this because thats
their technique.

true because cisco's localdirector sucks! :->

welcome to the club migz :->

but im looking forward this coming switch-off this coming july 30 to august
3 because there is a marketing and technical superiority between altheon and
foundry :-> but of course the LVS community claims that they are superior
than the two above. :-> so let us wait this switch-off results.

for more info this coming switch-off:

for fritz,

if you are looking for a load balancer otherwise known as layer 4
switch, you have to know your layer 8 and layer 9 first. these layers
popularly known as budget and politics respectively.

acquiring a layer 4 switch iron is very expensive but you have the
alternative using LVS. aside from these, there are DNS round robin and LSNAT
(load sharing network address translation).the first two i mentioned have a
L7/L4/L3 health-check features while the last two dont have.

but if you want to know what other commercially products since that is what
your top management wanted, here are the lists that i know of:

Switches

    Alteon AceDirector Switch
    ArrowPoint ContentSmart Switch
    BlazeNet AppSwitch
    Foundry ServerIron Switch
    HolonTech HyperFlow Switch
    Extreme Networks Summit4 Switch

Hardware

    Cisco's Local Director
    Cisco Distributed Director
    HydraWeb Hydra900
F5 Labs BigIP Server Array System
    RND Web Server Director

Software

    BrightTiger ClusterCats
    CERFNet WebChorus
    CheckPoint ConnectControl
    IBM eNetwork Dispatcher
    Resonate Central Dispatch
    SGI WebFORCE Director
    IPivot IP Broker

happy evaluating
