As the administrator of the entire database system (normally postgres),
use the CREATE USER command to create a new user.
This may not work for you, but it's a general path you can take:
1. From the shell:
$ psql -U postgres template1
2. From the psql prompt:
template1=> \h CREATE USER
Then follow the pattern to create your user 'emer'. :)
I've been wondering why support for PAM authentication hasn't been folded
into the mainstream PostgreSQL releases, when a number of patches have
already been submitted by various people. I'm not a database expert, but
I'm sure the PostgreSQL development team has their reasons. Maybe someone
on the list who is more familiar with this can help out? For simplicity's
sake, I would personally find it of much help if all my Unix users could
already access the PostgreSQL system with the standard privileges (which
normally means they can't do much).
