there are numerous pre-installed users in the /etc/passwd file. some of which are indeed not being used and may be removed (/etc/group file may/ should also be updated, if you do this). but in any system, before deleting anything, make sure you make backups of the file/s so that you can restore them back if in any case something goes wrong after restarting/relogging. hope this helps. ----- there are a lot of user acounts in our server. like news, lp, etc. can i safely delete them or is it okay for them to remain there because they are essential to the smooth operation of the server? what about their passswords? anyway, thanks.
