How about trying "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy"? Or maybe you can specify
the filesystem type via "-t vfat" or something like that?

Perhaps you do not have Microsoft Joliet support enabled in your kernel?
This is specified at compile time via "make {x,menu}config".
