FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCAL LINUX ENTHUSIASTS HOLD 10th Year CELEBRATION

On 25 August 1991, Linus Benedict Torvalds announced to the world the
availability of a free operating system which would later be named
'Linux'.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Linus Benedict Torvalds)
Newsgroups: comp.os.minix
Subject: What would you like to see most in minix?
Summary: small poll for my new operating system
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Organization: University of Helsinki

Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and
I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)
Linus ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

-----------------------------------------

Since then the landscape of computing has never been the same. Linux has
been tested, developed and contributed to by hundreds of volunteer
programmers and administrators, and has proven to be one of the most
successful open source products to date.

With maturity, stability, functionality and security exceeding that of
equivalent commercial software products, this freely available operating
system is now the choice of a wisened new generation of system
administrators, and even desktop users. It is therefore not surprising
that according to IDC statistics, Linux now comprises 17% of all reported
servers and has had a 212% annual growth rate as of the last report.

The local linux community will unite this Saturday, 25 August 2001 to
celebrate the 10th anniversary of this historic day in computing history.
The whole day affair, dubbed 'Linux10' will be held at the premises of the
Asia Pacific College, Humabon Place, Magallanes, Makati City. Volunteer
Linux enthusiasts will hold free talks and tutorial sessions on both
advanced and beginner topics.

The public is invited to come and enjoy the festivities. Food will be
served to interested participants and volunteers (FREE for the first 150
persons to arrive. Visit and fill up the online registration form at
