        I guess what you want is to have text mode (b&w console login)
instead of X11 (gnome,kde,x)  as your default mode when you boot up your 
system. In that case, you have to edit your /etc/inittab file to default 
at runlevel 3  (or 2) by replacing the line:

id:5:initdefault:

with

id:3:initdefault:

        See man pages of inittab, init and runlevel for more details.
        If you initially installed RH with a vga monitor then you have to 
reconfigure your display. I believe this has been discussed many times 
before. See previous threads. Basically you can use Xconfigurator or 
xf86setup or a similar tool to do the job.
