hrmm..

1. close all  unnecessary ports.. check your inetd.conf or xinetd or some
daemons (portmap, lpd, statd, rpc.* etc..)
2. use tcpwrappers
3. use secure connection... ssl or ssh
4. check for latest software updates
5. use firewall (ipchains / iptables)
