I downloaded XFree86-4.1.0 from Red Hat 7.2 beta. This entailed upgrading
a few other packages (glibc, xinitrc, Mesa).

According to /var/log/XFree86.log direct-rendering is enabled. I have a
DRI-enabled libGL.so (strings /usr/lib/libGL.so | grep DRI). However when
I run glxinfo I still get the Mesa indirect renderer!!

(no I am not using an NVIDIA card so this isn't as plug-and-play as it
could be)
