I'm using OpenOffice 638 to write my Master's Dissertation here at the
University of Warwick. It hasn't failed me yet.
Also, saving in XML formats seems to save a lot of space. The XML format
of Writer 6.0 produces a file 4 times smaller than the file produced by
StarWriter 5.0. And the file produced by M$-Word is even bigger than the
  StarWriter 5.0 file.
The we browser seems to have problems though. As a whole, as Ian said,
it's NYRFPT (not yet ready for prime time).
