is he by any chance using SASL to authenticate via pam or shadow?  If he
is, then the problem lies in an inherent limtation of the PAM libraries in
that using programs must be run at superuser level for it to work.  This
is because the shadow file is readable by root only.  The solution is to
use the 1.5.27 version which has a standalone saslauthd running as root,
and listens via a unix domain socket.  SASL clients talk to the daemon via
the socket and get their results via that link.

If your need is twiddling around with the source, go get the SOURCE RPM
which has both the tarball and the commands to get it up and running on
your box.  This makes is _very_ easy to setup the package on another box
if need be.
