Yes, Linux users all over the world help each other to develop Linux. And
not just the kernel, but the various Linux-based applications, as well.
<http://www.freshmeat.net/> is a great start to see the various software
that are free as in speech, written and maintained by various enthusiasts,
the true hackers.

No, this does not mean that manufacturers don't play a part. While it is
true that certain manufacturers do not cooperate [1], a growing number of
them are throwing full support behind Linux.

[1] And example is ASUS. The lm_sensors team had to do a trial-and-error
approach to get lm_sensors working with their as99127f sensor, which I
have.
