hi there bert,

afaik, to enable ip forwarding, you need a kernel with ip forwarding enabled, 
AND "1" in the file /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward 

in other words, if the "echo 1 > ..." solution worked for you, it means that 
your kernel was ALREADY compiled with ip forwarding enabled.

if you don't want to "echo 1 > ..." on every boot, you can set it in the file:
/etc/sysctl.conf  (at least for redhat systems, that is)
