During the past three (3) JavaOne Developer Conferences, Sun provided

floors.  All attendees were given Java SmartCards upon registration.  The
cards served as ID, and access key to those Sun Ray appliances.

With the right mix of components, of course it is possible.  There are 
already commercial thin-client products based on Linux that are out in the
market.

I've seen IBM NetVista Thin Clients With TurboLinux in one of the 
developer conferences I've been to (I forgot with one).
