Don't ask on this list, everyone is sure to display more than a great
deal of bias! :)

You have been warned, so now...

>From my observation, the biggest problem with NT/W2K is that it tries
to hide too much from the administrator. It dumbs-down system
administration so much that there are far more ignorant NT admins than
ignorant Linux admins. Windows 2000 tries to keep you from thinking
too much about the day-to-day details of administering your system,
but that's the opposite of what you want to be doing when doing system
administration, especially if you're deeply concerned with security
(you should be, most especially if you are running a box that sits on a
live, routable IP address!). System administration is not really an
easy thing, as much as Windows would attempt to make you believe
otherwise. There are real duties, real problems that need to be
investigated, and all Microsoft has accomplished in W2K is provide a
better excuse for you to stick your head in the sand and pretend these
problems don't exist.

Linux has built up the philosophy in those who use it often to get to
learn stuff about it, figure out all the important details. Windows
does exactly the opposite, attempting to insulate you from important
details about your system. Allowing you to fiddle around while the
system burns. If you're an NT/W2K admin who hasn't managed to fall
into this trap, I salute you, and probably the only reason why your
box will get hacked is because Microsoft itself failed to provide
bug-free software (when did they ever?).

The worst problem with using a Microsoft solution is just that. It's
a Microsoft solution. You'll be stuck with them till the day you die
once you do that. You'll be forced to use all Microsoft solutions for
the most part. You'll need to pay to use inferior software.
