My son bought a second hand Dell Latitude CPi D300XT laptop from Japan [dirt cheap]. This is s Celeron 300Mhz system with Neomagic video controller driving a 1024x768 LCD/TFT color screen.
I installed AdmuLinux [kernel 2.4.3, glibc 2.2.3, xfree 4.0.3], then run xf86config, selecting the Neomagic video controller and 30-50 horizontal, 50-70 vertical for the LCD/TFT [pure guess work], 1024x768 - 16bit color. The result was fantastic, and KDE 2.1 couldn't get any more beautiful. Then I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.9 and glibc to 2.2.4 but I did not touch the installed xfree 4.0.3. Now the best I could get is 800x600 at 8bit color, but only after using the timings that one finds in the Internet for Dell Latitude CPi D300XT. What went wrong? The pixels are so visibly big that the screen looks really bad. Question 2: Where can one get keyboard stickons to cover the Japanese keys with English keys? Also the layout of the Japanese keyboard is so wierd, and I do not want to memorize two different keyboard layouts. Thanks. PMana P.S. Now I have to learn how to configure the USB floppy drive, the IR port, the built-in mouse area, and power management. The PCMCIA serial modem and 3com lancard were autodetected and so were easily configured. _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
