In his autobiography, Linus writes that he got his 33 MHz 386 PC/AT (16MHz was standard at that time) with 4MB ram (2 MB was standard) on January 2, 1991 for 18000 FIM (about US$3500) on 1/3 down payment and the rest amortized over a three year period. It was no-name generic PC in gray color, 14" monochrome monitor, and ran DOS. He was living with his grandfather at that time, was a student, didn't have enough money and didn't really care that he did not have enough mnoey because his whole life was "computers". That's all he thought about and dreamed about. He first got Minix to run on this machine, then wrote his terminal emulator program so that he can connect to the mainframe at the University (Helsinki). The book, "Just for fun" is really a good read. Here you see Linus bare his soul, his dreams, his computers. PMana _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
