The smallest 2.4.10 kernel that I could squeeze out
is still over 2.5MB (uncompressed), and that does not include
the modules, of which I have lots.  So 2.4.X has really become
a huge monolith.

While BSD is open source, the closely-knit BSD team never
really accepted contributions from outsiders.  This, I believe,
is the primary reason why BSD is not as popular.  It is not truly
a community effort.
