I'm reading the office copy of the old Programming Python first ed. by Lutz.
On the O'Reilly catalog you can see that there's a second ed. and a 
Learning Python as well, which should be gentler to newbies like us.

As for online material I've yet to start looking for tutorial-type materials.
I looked at Bruce Eckel since he did Java PDF's and I found this:

No, he doesn't have a Python book out yet.
