Philippine Borland User Group (PhilBUG) made a big leap as it conducted the
first of the series of training-seminars starting off with a four-hour
discussion on Linux last Saturday, October 20 at the E-Commsite office on
the 30th floor of IBM Plaza in Eastwood, Quezon City. The event was
organized to pave the way for the next batch of seminars on Borland products
that run on Linux, namely Kylix and the upcoming C++ Builder for Linux.

Two of the PhilBUG Core members, namely Meric Mara and Elline Roquel,
spearheaded the event as they discussed the Red Had Linux installation and
Linux File Systems.

Elline started the seminar by giving an interactive demonstration of the
Red Hat Linux installation. Although detailed, since you don't normally get
to set up firewalls and partitions, the demo only lasted for an hour. You
could imagine her racing with Lydia de Vega and winning by a mile. This
young and vibrant lady in a technical clothes, orange shirt and denims,
captured the attention of everybody. Proof? She was only bombarded with
questions of which she proved her expertise by brief and direct answers.

A 15-minute break followed after Elline finished her part. Since no one
wants to have their seats be taken, the entire room was already filled with
people before the break ends. Well, this just causes Gorge and I to take
the Standing Room area while eating our breakfast-lunch only because our
seats were taken! You couldn't imagine now how many people were there.
They were overflowing.

Shortly, Meric took charge of the floor as he discussed Linux file system,
shells and commands. Now this guy was just fabulous with his all-black
attire seemingly looks like a geek or something. This entire room that
filled with people were quietly listening to the full voice of this witty
speaker resonating throughout the room. He talked about file permissions as
if the future of earth depended on it. He could give Noli de Castro a run
for his money.

Question and Answer portion followed where the participants were given the
time to throw whatever it was that bugging their minds and most of them were
on installing of drivers, using of commands, etc. Here the people got the
chance to get the answers straight from the experts.

Of course, before we end the seminar, we gave way for some speech to the
PhilBUG president who also made it possible for this event to come to
reality, that is, Rocky baby! If not for the E-commsite's kindness, we will
not be able to hold this kind of training. Thank you for the facilities and
the place! Bravo!

As we release all those participants, we gave a Trial Versions of Borland
Kylix to the first 15 people who attended the seminar in appreciation for
the overwhelming attendance. Kylix is the Delphi for Linux programming
tool.

Of more than 30 participants, not a bad number though, 25 of those are
non-PhilBUGgers. This large number of people was a big surprise to the
organization considering the announcement for the event was quite sudden.
All 25 slots were not only taken but also not sufficient to accommodate all
attendees. Nevertheless it has given the group a new source of inspiration
as they plan the next batch of seminars. Guaranteed a must see as they will
showcase the leading tools from Borland, like C++ Builder, Delphi, J
Builder, JSP and more. Plans to cover Java as also considered.

Meric is a Brainbench certified and currently connected with Union Bank of
the Philippines as IT Manager I handling the Linux systems. He administers
on Linux for more than four years now and has a widely exposed on both
software and hardware technologies.

Elline is an IT Professional for over 4 years and is highly exposed to a
wide range of software technologies, capable of handling tasks that require
administrative knowledge in a Unix platform environment. She is now the
System Administrator for iDSFinance, a financial portal company in Makati.

For the record, the seminar started and ended on time.
