doc,
actually running kill -30 1 at root will trigger this default line
inside /etc/inittab:
pf::powerfail:/sbin/shutdown -f -h +2 "Power Failure; System Shutting Down"
it will give you 2 minutes of grace period to shutdown. but you need a
tool to query the status of your battery life, take a look at apmd and apm
to suit your needs.
