Are you using netfilter/iptables? You may need to increase the number of
buckets/connection tracks specified in
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max . When the maximum is reached (just
cat | wc -l to find out how many are being conntracked), the system will
literally grind to a halt. The only solution is to increase it (which
will require more memory of course).
