[plug] /var contents gone

Hi again,   After I compiled the kernel(2.4.14) to a newly installed RH 7.2 on a test workstation, the contents(directories) are gone but when I booted again to my previous kernel(2.4.7) the directories are.    Why is this so?   TIA
