Well, perhaps a good processor would be an AMD Athlon or Duron, 750MHz
and up.

If you want 3D, I think Orly would probably recommend an ATI Radeon, as
it seems to have good compatibility with Linux and provides good 3D
acceleration performance.  An nVidia GeForce also works well,
apparently, but then nVidia seems to be playing lip service to the open
source movement...

Well, get a nice set of speakers.  I guess a set of Altec Lansing
speakers similar to those Alistair once brought to the office should be
fine.  Cambridge Soundworks are also pretty good, 'cept I've never heard
them myself.

AMD Athlon 750 or better
128-256MB of RAM
as much hard disk space as you can get (20G+)
ATI Radeon or nVidia GeForce
...
