Too much. When compounded with less memory and multifarious
processes, processes are swapped out of memory to a backing store
such as a hard drive/swap file on disk, while others are given their
share of processing time and memory resource. More memory would
entail less swapping of processes to the disks, resulting in faster
operations. This means so much in server environments, wherein
there are a lot of simultaneous processes going on. Having a low
amount of RAM with low hard disk space might mean death to a machine,
as the CPU scheduler is occupied by swapping processes in and out of
memory to and fro the hard disks, while at the same time accomodating
the users' processes. It's not simply enough to have a very fast
processor (you can switch from one process to another faster, but
you don't minimize swapping that way).
