I just finished editing the series "Computing for Life", a computer textbook for Philippine schools (N,K,P,G1-6,Y1-4) written by computer teachers from UP High, Ateneo High, DLSU High, etc. It will be published by FNB Educational (http://www.fnbeducational.com/). Book launching will be this Saturday (15 Dec 2001) at Colegio de San Lorenzo at Congressional, Q.C. If you are a computer teacher in GS or HS you are invited to attend the book launching. I think this is the first computer textbook series written for the Philippines.
Your guess is right -- the earlier books (N to Y1) teach the students how to use Windows and Office. Y2 is Visual Basic Programming + a little VBA, Y3 is C+HTML, and Y4 is HTML+Java. I would have prefered LOGO for grade school, the way it is done at the Ateneo, but the teachers wanted Win+Office. Also I would have wanted language independent study of algorithms (not syntax of C or Java or Basic) for high school, but that is not too popular among the teacher-authors, who have not done algorithms themselves. But we are already thinking of our second edition; and there things will be better. PMana _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
