or pass an init=/bin/sh to the boot-image before you fire it up to load
the kernel into memory.

As for the design "flaw,"  Thompson and Ritchie designed UNIX that
way (with a single all-powerful account root) for simplicity's sake
instead of using flashy and difficult to implement algorithms which
would give them a hard time programming it.
