Both can run tolerably there, though GNOME is faster. But, compared with
the lightweight WMs on a similar setup, GNOME and KDE2 crawl...

Others have posted the real reasons...

Tried them on even slower systems (Pentium 90, 16MB of RAM). KDE2 is
the worst, followed by GNOME with Enlightenment, then GNOME with Sawfish. The only
reasonable thing to do is don't use any of the two
desktop environments and stick to the lightweight window managers like
fvwm2 (feeble? vwm...), window maker, afterstep... for those low end
systems (we still use them in my dad's office since we can't afford
upgrading the hardware at all), I installed blackbox. Users simply need
to right-click at the desktop, navigate through the simple menu and
presto - application launches.

First I considered using Windows 95 to get them working (no kidding,
that thought ran through my mind...), but since I can't find Win95
anymore, decided to use Linux instead. saved a lot of money though
initially it was tough... the machines run fine and fast (they run
better than my lone Pentium 200 running Windows (98FE) with 64 MB of RAM
which crashes once every two months). They were first running RH but
recently switched them to Debian Potato last sem to make upgrading them
easier.

OT: btw, does anyone know where can I buy cheap SIMMS? The Pentium 90's
and 120's (Compaq Prolineas) we have have 6 slots, of which two are
occupied with 8MB SIMMS. Is 16MB the limit for a SIMM card? or are there
even higher-end SIMMS (still) available?
