How about development or improvement of some orphaned software for a start? Like PSPP - it's not anymore actively maintained, but it holds some promise since it's eerily similar to SPSS (which is widely used by statisticians) A PLUG CVS would help, and PLUG can also offer binary distributions of such software (since the source is publicly accessible via CVS, it won't violate the GPL in terms of the distribution). And projects should not be locked to a specific platform, though Linux would be the preferred platform. Not to sound too monetary, but PLUG can earn here, aside from offering quality service.
