The sequence is normally:
1. Add standard UNIX user "username":
# adduser username
2. Add Samba user for "username":
# smbpasswd -a username
If this isn't working don't try to find an alternative way to add users,
as it probably means you have something else misconfigured which must be
fixed.
Check your Samba logs (normally in /var/log/samba) and find out what's
going on. The standard system logs in /var/log should also help. :)
