Greetings, and I hope you good folks don't mind my dropping in. I noticed this from last October:
Melchizedek Mauleon wrote: > ahh the famous rick moen :) lol > http://cr.yp.to/distributors.html Like most folks, I'm an idiot with dismaying frequency, sometimes multiple times before breakfast. ;-> However, Dan Bernstein attributes to me on that page a view that I never expressed, and don't hold. Which is a pity, because people _do_ listen to Dan: He's earned that, and I personally admire many aspects of the man. (He's something of a hero of mine for his role in the EFF court case against cryptography export restrictions, among other things.) Anyhow, just in case I was somehow unclear earlier, and to compensate for Dan's misrepresentation of my views, quite a few months ago, I put a follow-up on my rants ("FAQ") page: http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/#djb2 Q: Are you saying that DJB can revoke the licence to his software by changing or removing his Web pages? A: No, of course not. The prior essay [http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/#djb] nowhere states or implies that, nor does anything else I've said, Prof. Bernstein's assertions [http://cr.yp.to/distributors.html] notwithstanding. The fact that the tarballs of qmail and djbdns/tinydns for which Bernstein permits redistribution may not include copies of his generous (if proprietary) licence terms, together with his restrictions on mirroring of those licence terms, make it very awkward to independently and lastingly document his licence terms and your compliance with them. Not impossible, just very, very awkward -- one of the many hassles with Bernstein software that, in my view, make it not worth the trouble. The covered software itself may -- by those licence terms, be redistributed, in unmodified form, to anyone. In perpetuity. Some of the other hassles inherent in Bernstein's software are eloquently listed by my friend J. Paul Reed in a user group post [http://nclug.org/pipermail/nclug/2001-September/001852.html] (though his point "c" about licensing was in error on points detailed above). Anyhow, I'm really flattered that "Jijo" has my rants page listed as a Linux information resource! In case they're useful, I have some other stuff at http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/essays/ http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/lecture-notes/ http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/ http://linuxmafia.com/lwce2001/ ...and some have found my collection of backup tools and info useful, too: http://linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/backup/ -- Cheers, Rick Moen "vi is my shepherd; I shall not font."
