Hi,
I am recommending Postgresql to a client for their
in-house developed retail reporting and financial system. Their current
database is about 40 GB using DB2 on an AS400. They were planning to
purchase a dual processor license for DB2 (Linux Edition) which costs about
3.5M PHP. This is why I suggested Postgresql which we use for our
CRM. Problem is, our biggest CRM installation is only a 2GB database size
and has only been running in production for one month.
I was interested in knowing if there are any PLUG
members out there who have extensive experience with Postgresql and large
databases. Any learning experiences or tips and advice would be greatly
appreciated.
Also, just a thought...Linux companies out there
could probably make a pretty good living specializing in open source database
technology. DB2 dual processor licensing at 3.5M is actually cheap
compared to Oracle. Being able to offer an open source database with
add-on services (training, maintenance, add-on/customized APIs/tools
etc..) to big companies could potentially be revenue
generating.
