xen's Debian Tip-of-the-Day: Getting Mozilla to Java and more (March 7, 2002) =============================================================================
A common question I run into when people stopped using Netscape under Linux was how to get Mozilla to still support Java applets. Although there are several ways of doing this, one of the easiest methods for getting Debian Mozilla to use Java applets is right in the README.Debian included with the package. There's a lesson to be learned here. Read the READMEs included with packages that you install or upgrade. 1) First, add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/debian woody non-free 2) Next, run 'apt-get update'. 3) Then, run 'apt-get install j2re1.3' What this will do is install the Blackdown Java Linux runtime environment packaged for Debian. 4) In Mozilla, click on Edit/Preferences/Advanced then check on Enable Java. After going through the above steps, Mozilla will now work nicely with Java applets. And that's my Debian tip for today. Have any questions or tips about Debian GNU/Linux? I'm open to ideas for what to write about in my future articles. MORE ON PLUG-INS (CodeWeaver's CrossOver) For other neat plug-ins, you might also want to give the CrossOver PlugIn from CodeWeavers a try (http://www.codeweavers.com). They've done an excellent job of integrating Windows plug-ins using WINE and to date, support the following plug-ins: QuickTime 5, Shockwave 8.5, Windows Media Player 6.4, RealPlayer 8 Basic, Authorware Web Player 6, Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint Viewer 97/2000, Trillian, iPIX 6, MGI 3.2, Chime 2.6, MODPlug, VP3 for QuickTime, eFax Messenger 2. I've gotten the first three to working, and suspect that the other plugins will work as well. I'll leave a review of this neat product to Jeff Guttierez, who has been smitten by it. He's actually explored more of the product than I have and will probably have more to tell you about it than I can. Thanks to Paolo Carballo for introducing the product to me. Warning: the CrossOver plug-in is crippleware. To get the full benefit of the product, you pay $25.95 for it. This enables the CodeWeavers team to continue working on WINE and contribute free code to it. I think it's a small price to pay to forward the advancement of their work on WINE, which is under an X11 like license. -- ___ eric pareja ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) User #8159 http://counter.li.org \e/ [ Chiba City: A Cyberpunk MUSH - http://chibacity.erisian.net ] Linux v [ Philippine Linux Users' Group + http://plug.linux.org.ph ] Software [ IRC /join #plug @irc.free.net.ph every evening 10pm onwards ] Freedom "All those moments will be lost in time like tears in the rain." _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
