I just tried, and it seems forcing a fixation of the disc using:

$ cdrecord -fix

makes the disc accessible. It also passes the full read test using:

$ tar c /cdrom | cat > /dev/null

So I shouldn't have thrown those "bad" discs away. Dagnamit! :(

I still wonder what causes these fixation errors, though. Hmm...
