true.. icmp is an unreliable protocol.. when you try to ping echo request
message to a host, it is expecting for a ping echo reply message (of
course).. fortunately for slackware unlike redhat, it compares the sending
packet to a receiving packet if it is equal or not aside from determining a
packet loss... if it is not, it is a sign that you have a bad network by
either a dirty link,  a bad router or a bad network device that is along the
path...

my recomendation is to have a bit error rate test (BERT) or find another
service provider <grin :->
