Is it possible? Yes. Will it be usable? Probably not. The problem lies in the fact that "your plain old pc" is not that old at all. PC's six years ago used EEPROMs and their BIOSes still complied strictly with IBM standards, to the point where the EEPROM portion where old BASIC would be, remained, but were unused. If you had an EEPROM burner, you could get one PC's BIOS, copy the code and burn it into a busted PC's EEPROM, which would then boot up perfectly. Then came NVRAM, which was first used by PC-POS systems. After that came flash ROM and the unlimited number of upgrades to motherboard BIOSes. There is so much magic done by BIOSes these days that even if it worked, you would be limited to a certain chipset.
